Searching for a new career (or your first career!), can be a daunting task. The anxiety caused from the thought of choosing a job that you will be performing day-in and day-out for the foreseeable future can derail a search before it even gets started. You begin questioning yourself; “What if I pass up something that could be my dream job?”… “How do I know if I am going to like my new job?”… “What do I want to do for the rest of my life?” On and on, you chip away at your self-confidence until you find yourself unable to make even the simplest of decisions.
The best way to combat this nervousness is to arm yourself with knowledge. The more you know about a particular position and its demands, the more confident you will feel when making a decision about your future. This post will help provide some insight in your career search as it explores the world of Retail Management through the experiences of three of Blain’s Farm & Fleet’s Management team members.
Ben, who began his career with Blain’s Farm & Fleet 5 years ago, said that the variety of his daily tasks is what he enjoys the most about Retail Management. “Each day is different. On any given day, I could be doing about one of 100 different tasks, and I love that. The challenge of adapting my day to tackle any number of items keeps my work day fresh.” He also enjoys the size of Blain’s Farm & Fleet stores. “We sell so many different types of products it’s unbelievable. One minute I could be assisting a customer with tires and then the next I can be helping our warehouse team break down freight off of a pallet.” Ben’s enjoyment of the variety of tasks is a perfect fit for Retail Management as effective managers are on the floor, interacting with customers and associates, taking the pulse of the store and reacting to the variety of tasks and challenges that arise.
Outstanding communication skills is a must in Retail Management as you can have up to 200 people looking at you for direction or just one customer looking at you for assistance. “You have to truly love interacting with others,” states 10 year Blain’s veteran Chelsea. “I look at each customer or associate issue as a challenge… How can I make this person’s life better today?” Chelsea states that the satisfaction she feels after fixing an issue is enough to lift her spirits for the whole day. Outgoing people with the drive to help associates get better at their jobs, or make sure a customer has an outstanding experience is the number one trait our recruiters look for. We can teach you how to run a register, but we can’t teach you to have a dynamic personality
Each day Retail Managers are faced with hundreds of decisions that can lead to an improvement or decline in the store’s sales or its staff’s morale. Josh, one of our newest managers, loves the entrepreneurial feel of Retail Management. “I am entrusted with making decisions that affect the bottom line of our company. I can dig into the sales figures and decide how I am going to drive sales and then come back the next week and see how we did. It’s awesome!” Our managers are empowered to make critical decisions and in Josh’s first few weeks with Blain’s Farm & Fleet, his store’s Regional Manager told him not to worry about making the wrong decision. “Just make the best decision for your customer or associate, and 9 times out of 10, that will be the correct decision.
